Idle processes left logged in on a system can be a security risk. They can also violate regulatory requirements.

If a process is logged in and left unattended, it can be used for unauthorized purposes. Depending on the privileges of such a process, this could represent a critical security risk.

Idle processes also consume memory and pagefile/swapfile space, process slots and license units, etc.

Assassin is an idle process management solution which handles all of the above. It runs on VMS on Itanium, Alpha and VAX.

Assassin can be configured to detect idle processes according to CPU usage, I/O usage (direct I/O and buffered I/O), and pagefaults. Exceptions can be configured by Account, User Name, Terminal Name, Process Name, UIC, Image Name or Image Directory. This ensures that Assassin does not terminate any process which should not be considered idle.

Notifications to the system manager can be made via OPCOM, broadcast message, and/or email, regarding any actions taken by Assassin on idle Processes. A log is also kept of the idle processes found and actions taken on them.

Customized warnings can be given to idle processes, or they can be terminated without warning. The terminals of idle process can also be locked, requiring the VMS account password for unlocking.

Different images, processes or users, etc., can have different warning and termination times. If needed, the status value passed to a process being terminated can be customized to allow the process to do proper cleanup prior to termination.

Assassin can also be used to set a maximum time limit on how long any process remains logged in on the system regardless of whether the process is active or not.

Assassin is easy to install and use on your system or in an OpenVMS cluster environment and is easily configured using a menu interface with context-sensitive help.

Since 1982, Networking Dynamics has made Enterprise IT security, mandatory audit compliance and administration simple and easy for medium to large corporations and with a low cost of ownership and excellent support.
